CALEB'S Wonderful 60 hours at Redlands Univesity & City... Much Recollection & Thankfulness (thank, you, for Scrolling&Deleting) "GRATITUDE" is the word I feel deeply... to all those who HELPED ME in the City of Redlands & University for the "Feast of Lights", Science Building Dedication; & 60 hours with the woman I love: Laura Vroman..She,with me were the Freshmen Chapel speakers in October of 1932! Laura & I are "neunagenarians" 91 & 93: We both have wonderful Family's and rejoice in having Twin children…Both our Spouses are deceased.. We are in the adolescence of Old Age & are Squeezing Life's loan to the fullest... The new Science Bldg and Building honoring the ministry of President Appleton ,for the past 18 years, is spectacular with a fantastic view of the mountains. Our new President. Stuart Dorsey presided. The chaplain, John Walsh's prayer was focused and "right on" Science & Religion were the focus of the week-end. Einstein, once said "For Man to be effective in his living, he needs both Science & Religion." One delightful memory was ,week after week with about 8 or 10 classmates on the roof of the old Science building with Dr. Van Osdel and studying the stars ,conversing with a great Soul-my Geology Teacher; Founder, of Alpha Gamma Nu; a man always in Church on Sundays.... The "Feast of Lights" was unashamedly Christian,& inclusive...A great band & rich, well-trained voices, performing beneath the Christ Window ,depicting the Sermon the Mount was memorable. Our Baptist forbears did a great thing in placing the Chapel at the center of the Campus... The Tableau was of the Shepherds finding Jesus by Revelation..& the Wisemen finding Him by Investigation... As I meditated on my own history; I thought of the Economics Professor who convinced me that Wars were Wrong & fought over Wealth, Earths riches & power over others... My first Demonstration against War was in waving banners and cutting Chapel. Redlands made me a life-long Pacifist and "JesusMan" for all my 68 years of public ministry with the American Baptist Churches... I , with my late soul-mate Carol, are more indebted to Redlands than we can ever repay…All four of our children,& two grandchildren are graduates whose values reflect the Redland's spirit, mold & opportunity. Their dedication to making a better world for all,& helping others, makes me I'm very proud of them . They have helped establish a "Shikles-Styn Scholarship for Sophomore through the Senior year....A living kind of memorial. So, for this visit , I come saying "Thank You"...
