Now this 2nd Travel book begins with the writing Jan.13th 1966. Where were you (Our 4 children) making “Shikles Six” in 1966? ....Dr. Armacost at the University of Redlands had already asked me to give the Baclaureate Address in June ,when John& Jim would be graduating. Sue was teaching School in Montgomery County outside of Washington D.C. & we were planning to visit David, an AID worker in Viet Nam. Janet his wife, was teaching school in Schulinlongkorn University in Bangkok, (We spoke to her Class). One of her students was the Prime Minister’s son. They went parachuting! She (Janet) landed in a dirty Klung Canal! She regularly sneaked over to Saigon, to see David; wearing what she called her “missionary clothes.” Carol became A Social Worker in the Denver Welfare Department, and made contacts with missionary friends around the World (17 of them). She purchased two “Round the World “Tickets from Pan Am for under $1500 a piece! This was a kind of Sabbatical. We had served Denver First Baptist Church for 11 years. Carol was now sure our four children would have their Bachelor degrees from Redlands. Our “Shikles Home Bank” was operated in an amazing way. In 1962 we had all four of our children at the University ! The Denver Post had a picture of all packing luggage in September. Carol writes: January 13-14-15-16 “Spent 4 days in Castro Valley with my parent’s. Dad very emotional-mother vague. They and we realize that we may not see each other again- Plan to return in June. Elroy spent an evening with dear friends, the Van Osdel’s Jan 17-... We were in Hawaii 18 & 19th 1966..Honolulu- Hawaii was Hot.! Art Sanford ,Baptist Minister,& his wife Natalie met us with lei’s and took us around the island. Much green foliage and blue water. Talked about ministering to ServiceMen..He was pastoring the Ewa Beach open-aired Church. Learned the missionary history of the Islands . They had compulsory school attendance before Massachusetts....The missionary children who came back after schooling; to the Islands had done well financially.... Visited Morris Fox, a Redlands Graduate (Elroy knew his parents) he was the State Director of Public Welfare.... Early Californians sent their children to Hawaii for education...also sent their shirts to the Island to be laundered .... A pregnant wife of a husband who is working, may apply for natal Assistance if husbands income is insufficient...Had a good visit with Leanne Turner-Johnson’s Dad who ran a big business in Green Bay... and owned shares in the Packer’s...He spent his winters in Hawaii... Jan.20-27Flew to Japan. Met at airport by Jerry Gano, whom we knew in Washington State, with a cardboard sign saying “Shikles.” He took us on a streetcar to our Hotel. Mothers work in Redlight District.....Worshipped with Reverend Hiroshi Suzuki and Chiaki Okanoto (Mead Director... Good group of young people present. Jan.21... in Nara with Elroy’s old Seminary friend ,Doyousuki Katena. His wife shared an hour Tea Ceremony, Foods were sweets, rice, beans, pastry, coffee. Elroy had attended his farewell in Oakland, California in 1939. He sailed home on the Cichabu Ma while scores of Japanese waved flags with a Red Ball in the center and shouted “Banzai !..Banzai !(For the Fatherland).. The Christian group sang “God be with you till we meet again..By his counsel..guide uphold you...with his sheep securely fold you...God be with you till we meet again....at Jesus feet.” We visited a Temple built in 75 A.D.... It’s been rebuilt several times and is one of the largest structures in the world. The Bronze Buddha weighs 500 tons. Nara was the Japanese Capital for a thousand years...In the Nijo Castle, built in 1603 we were fascinated by the creaking lumber in the hall of the nightingales. Any weight on the wood warned the Shogun of the approach of a would be assassin. Spent Sunday in Kyota Baptist Church...60 member “seekers”..no baptisms for one and one half years...36 people present. It was 3 degrees above freezing with only two small wood burning stoves... tea served after church to warm people. Went to Tokio Kabuki Theatre...stayed about an hour....All male actors with heavy makeup...a stylized emotional ”Greatest Story ever told” ...poor attendance. In Yokohama .. We visited the Sochin Girl’s school where Misako Nagashima, of our Denver Church ,went to school. Carol wrote: “1000 girls, in an 80 year old school. We were introduced to a large Student Body and Elroy spoke about Misako & her Family in Denver...They have rebuilt. During the war all buildings leveled...bodies were stacked on the Playing field during bombing....” ”Unto Gakuin,” on an adjoining hill, is the Boys school. They wear uniforms, & have daily Chapel. The men of management in Yokohama want their children to attend these schools. Echo Hunt, a Seminary classmate, and Missionary is a Teacher. We visited in her room. We went to lunch with Misako’s mother, who was President of the Baptist Women. At a luncheon, she presented me with a beautiful Pearl necklace.....Elroy & I spent many hours walking among the Buddha statues...seeking to comprehend “The Way of Enlightenment”. The Golden Pavilion dates back to 1397 & is a Zen Buddhism significant Shrine. The symbolism gardens, ponds, use of color and gold leaf had much to say to us in the background of our Protestant & more simplistic Faith. The five basic Precepts for Buddhists are: ”I undertake the precept to abstain from taking life. I understand the precept not to take what has not been given to me. I undertake the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct. I understand the precept to abstain from intoxicating beverages. Now it’s on to Hong Kong &Bangkok-VietNam.” Thank you for scrolling&Deleting ....Dad & Grandad (I want to do this now...It’s my Therapy)
